A Call to Persevere

Many of us, I am sure, have struggled with how we should serve the Lord in our daily lives. I know that for myself I have wondered whether I should pursue a career that has a more ‘Godly’ goal. A career devoted to proclaiming the Word of God.

I find it difficult to properly serve God as my day to day life is saturated with evil and wickedness, profanity and cursing, hatred and discontent. After being in this atmosphere for 8 hours – five days a week – 52 weeks a year I have trouble keeping my faith real and strong. Hearing the words and the conversations everyday has an affect whether we engage in the conversations or not. Our conscience can easily become desensitized by the attitudes of those outside of God.

We can be thankful to God that he has provided a Comforter to us to help us through this life on earth. We have been provided with strength – not in ourselves – but through Jesus Christ to persevere. The Apostle Jude, by the Holy Spirit has provided very comforting words to us “But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God” (Jude 1:20-21a, ESV) and also “Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy,” (Jude 1:24, ESV)

Praise God for His wonderful gift of perseverance in the faith. Without His strength we would not survive in this world and would definitely fall to all temptations!

Introduction to the Blog

Today I decided to start a blog. One might ask why I embark on this endeavour. Some would say that I have nothing to say or that what I have to say is not worth hearing. Even as I write I wonder why I came to this conclusion.

I guess I want my voice to be heard. I walk through life trying to make sense of what I am doing here. Why does God keep us here? Why not take us to heaven when he converts our souls? C. H. Spurgeon asked this question in his devotional “Morning and Evening” and I believe that his answer is biblical and appropriate.

“The answer is – they (Christians) are here that they may “live unto the Lord,” and may bring others to know His love. . . We are here to glorify Christ in our daily lives.”

I acknowledge that I am blessed immensely by God with so many wonderful gifts. I have a wife who loves me more than I deserve and we have been given two children whom we love dearly. I have a job which allows my wife to be home to raise our children. I belong to a church where God’s word is proclaimed faithfully each week. A church that holds to the Bible as the sole authority for all things. God has been kind to provide freedoms in Canada to own Bibles and books written by Godly men and women. There is no lack of resources to help a Christian walk faithfully.

We are all called to live a life that pleases God. Not just when we go to church or lead our family in prayer and worship. Therefore we read our Bible.

In addition to the Bible I surround myself with good books written by men who knew God to assist me in my personal walk. All of this while continuing to keep the Bible as the only true guide and standard for how we should walk.

It is my prayer that this blog will serve to assist any readers in their walk with God (as well as my own). I claim no expertise or authority except for what the Bible says. I hope to write about issues facing the Reformed Church in my area of the world as well as issues facing the church universally.
